Ankle Deep

Sun streams in, I open my eyes
Driftin’ through a dream, after several tries
My courage wells up, I swing my legs around
Hear my feet splash onto the flooded ground
I wade to the kitchen, pour a cup of joe
Glance at my watch, I really gotta go
Splash down the sidewalk with the morning mob
Submerged on the highway to my soggy job
Wasn’t a surprise, we all saw it coming
Could’ve done something ‘bout it, long time ago
Melted all the ice, then it started flooding
Now I’m standing ankle deep in the Gulf of Mexico
Here on my desk sits a picture of my daughter
On her wedding day, I walked her down the water
A beautiful bride, such a pretty smile
The train of her white dress floating down the aisle
Wasn’t a surprise, we all saw it coming
Could’ve done something ‘bout it, long time ago
Melted all the ice, then it started flooding
Now I’m standing ankle deep in the Gulf of Mexico
We ignored all the signs, drowned out the science
Almost like we really didn’t want to know
And still today, there’s a stream of defiance
Standing ankle deep in the Gulf of Mexico
End of the day, I hear the whistle blow
Gather my things, step into the flow
Hail a canoe, that’ll do fine
Paddle on home ’cross the salty brine
Wasn’t a surprise, we all saw it coming
Could’ve done something ‘bout it, long time ago
Melted all the ice, then it started flooding
Now I’m standing ankle deep in the Gulf of Mexico
We ignored all the signs, drowned out the science
Almost like we really didn’t want to know
And still today, there’s a stream of defiance
Standing ankle deep
Standing ankle deep
I’m standing ankle deep in the Gulf of Mexico
