Right Before My Eyes

Why was it easier for me to believe what I believed than to
See what was right before my eyes?
How could I find comfort in sanctimonious morals while
Ignoring your actual heartfelt cries?

If hindsight’s twenty-twenty, then
Believe me, I’ve learned plenty since then
So many things I wish I could undo

But I can’t go back in time
It’s too late to make you mine
Why was it easier for me to believe what I believed than to
See what was right before my eyes?

When you’re brought up a certain way and hear what all the grownups say
At home, at church, and even at the school
And it literally takes you decades to realize that all this time
You’ve been acting like a damned fool

If hindsight’s twenty-twenty, then
Believe me, I’ve learned plenty since then
So many things I wish I could undo

But I can’t go back in time
It’s too late to make you mine
Why was it easier for me to believe what I believed than to
See what was right before my eyes?

Wish I could go back and say I’m sorry
Wish that I could tell you I was wrong
I would make it up, rewrite our story
But I can’t go back and
Don’t know where you are
Best that I can do is try to soldier on

If hindsight’s twenty-twenty, then
Believe me, I’ve learned plenty since then
So many things I wish I could undo

But I can’t go back in time
It’s too late to make you mine
Why was it easier for me to believe what I believed than to
See what was right before my eyes?

I can’t go back
It’s too late
How could I miss
What was right before my eyes?
